As you may know, we began looking into adoption back in 2005 by speaking with various US adoption agencies and social workers. We were lucky enough to find a nice US adoption agency that deals with Americans abroad. There were lots of options and every family is different. China was highly recommended to us due to the good health and adaptability of the babies there, and the transparency of their adoption system. So we began the long bureaucratic process to complete the paperwork for the authorities in the US, China, and Switzerland.
March 14, 2006 our application was formally accepted by the Chinese government, and we joined the queue of families waiting to adopt Chinese babies. When we initially applied, the waiting period to adopt from China was typically 9 months. Over time, the waiting period became much, much (much!) longer due to a variety of reasons within China. Now we have officially been waiting for just over 3 years!
Every month, the Chinese adoption authority matches a group of available babies with the next families in the queue. We are getting very close, and expect to be matched at the end of April, or perhaps at the end of May. At that time, we will receive the file with our baby’s photo and details (the “referral”).
We should travel to China to pick up our new daughter about 1-2 months after accepting the referral, so we are hoping to finally meet our bundle of joy sometime this summer. Stay tuned for further updates!
